If a death occurs at a private residence, or in a nursing/care facility

Contact the deceased’s’ or care facilities’ GP to arrange for them to visit and confirm your loved one’s passing and issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.

If a death occurs in hospital

Usually the next of kin will be contacted by the hospital’s bereavement team and arrange collection of any personal effects.

They will ensure the Medical Certificate of Cause of death is issued by the appropriate doctor.

The team will inform you of the procedure for registering the passing.

Your loved one will remain in the care of the hospital until the death has been registered, we have the green certificate and various other forms have been completed so that we can then make arrangements to bring your loved one into our care.

When a death is unexpected

If a death occurs suddenly outside of a medical setting or the deceased has not been seen by a medical professional in approximately the last fourteen days:

You will need to dial 999 immediately and request an ambulance and the police

The Emergency Services will report the death to the coroner and arrange for the coroner’s team to collect your loved one.

The Coroner will then decide whether they wish to request any further investigation like a post mortem or inquest, they will keep you informed at each stage of the process.

Once the coroner has completed their investigations you will then be able to contact us to discuss making the arrangements and for us to request the necessary paperwork from the coroner enabling us to arrange collection of your loved one.
